Sage walked slow, so he wouldn’t walk to far ahead of Kenzie.  She was tired.  She was also worried for Kat.  She remembered the small fact of them being lovers once before, she hoped he wasn’t all bad; and only there to be with Kat again.  She smiled at the thought of something being happy in her life again.

Kenzie thought of where she was going, back to the Iron Court.  Back to Ethan.  She got butterflies thinking about him.  OH, how she missed that rebel.  She didn’t want to think of Lucien’s threat; she wished it to only be a threat.  Fey were great at making those, and going through on them.  It was one of the reasons she went so willingly with Sage, she had no idea what this deal’s “or else” would have been had she refused to leave.

Fenris walked by her side, Kenzie would pet his head every now and again; making the animal smile.

"Are you sulking?"  Sage called, just as they left the border of Tir Na Nog.

"I’m not sulking, I’m…worrying, over-thinking.  Lots of emotions."

"Don’t worry about Kat, she will be fine."

"I know this, I just feel it’s my fault she is there.  If I hadn’t have gone walking away from the castle, I’d have never been there.  That exchange would never have happened."

"You couldn’t have known all this was going to happen."  the prince stopped, giving the human some rest, "You did what you thought was right or what your brain said was the right thing to do.  No one could have predicted this.  But, it would be nice if you stayed in the castle and only leave it with someone else who can adequately protect you from fey who wish you harm."

Kenzie knew he was right, so she started walking in front of him, determined to get back to Ethan by night fall.

Lucien led Kat through Tir Na Nog late into the night. The feline was completely under-dressed for such a trek and was shivering. It took Lucien nearly an hour and a half to notice, and quickly removed his outer jacket to place it around her shoulders.

"Now you’re going to be cold."

"No, we are not far from the trod. I will be fine."

"Trod?"

Lucien raised an eyebrow and chuckled, “You really thought the queen would be in Mab’s domain?”

Kat kept quiet, pulling the heavy coat around her. They walked passed a frozen lake when the sun came out again. The Nevernever was never truly consistent in tracking day and night, but the sun was welcome warmth. While she was reveling in the thought of warming up, Kat let her guard down enough to taste the glamours around her. Of course there was the obvious winter glamour, the air and ground were full of it, but she could feel one she hadn’t felt in a while; death. Now, death shouldn’t really have a glamour. Glamour comes from the living and emotional by definition pretty much, but it tasted dark and bitter and cold.

"You can feel it can’t you? I feel you tugging at it," Lucien smirked. "That’s the glamour of the Forgotten."

"Forgotten don’t have glamours, you have to steal others’." I stopped walking for a minute. Lucien turned to face me and his smirk slipped into something more menacing.

"For the weakest of our race, maybe, but not for the Queen and myself. Sage even was strong enough to hold on to one. The fool chose his winter glamour over his queen’s. At the time we did not know who he was, but it does make sense now."

"You taste horrible," I scrunched my nose at him. "Like bitter coffee and licorice."

"And you taste of nothing," he snapped. "You yourself have no glamour. Kat, when you meet the queen I suggest you hold you tongue; it could get you into a lot of trouble."

And just like that he was cool to her for the rest of the trip. Lucien stayed three steps ahead of Kat and she gave up on trying to catch up. This game of indifference only lasted twenty more paces, when they came upon a large frozen oak. Lucien knelt in the snow and began mumbling in a language Kat had never heard. Russian? She would have asked him if the tree hadn’t started glowing; which it did, very brightly.

"Now, time to meet Her Highness." Lucien gave Kat an almost feral grin before grabbing her arm a little too roughly and pulling her through.

"Mhm."

Kat pursed her lips and raised an eyebrow. Of course something like this happened. Grim was going to have a laugh at her later over this blunder. The Chef? What in the world made her think he’d be here.

"Well, if you see a grey fluff-ball be sure to let me know." Kat spared a glance at the cookies laying out to cool and gave a small smirk. "They don’t smell half-bad."

image

"Of course not, they’re baked with love and careful preparation minus the sweat." He grinned, he took one and offered it to her. Compared to all the other fey Jullie didn’t have nor needed a reason to be skeptic.

"You can get one if you want. I have a whole other batch in the oven." He took one himself, "Don’t worry the only nuts I mixed in are macadamia nuts. Also I’ll remember to tell you if I do, Miss..?"

Kat smiled down at the extended treat one a moment before reaching out and taking it gratefully.

"Mhm, we can trade names later," Kat shook her head playfully. She took a bite of the cookie and was surprised at its flavor. "These are really good, baker."

Kat looked around the room and was unsettled at how…. normal everything felt. She could not get a deceptive or malicious read from the fey’s glamour. She only saw contentment and ease. Kat looked over at the seemingly harmless fey.

"Why a baker?" Kat’s curiosity had gotten the better of her, so she found a windowsill to perch in.

No Need to Disappear

Kenzie found herself floating in darkness for what seemed like hours. When she came back to reality, she was in the middle of the Wyldwood. chains were around her ankles, and another holding her…

Kenzie was quiet as Lucien sat down in a chair in the hallway.  She stood next to him, so he was uncomfortable.

She noticed, from his furrowed brow, that he was in someone’s head.  She had no idea who, or what he was doing to them.

After what seemed like an hour or Kenzie staring at him, Lucien stood.

"Well," he spoke slowly, "It looks like you are heading home.  Kat has agreed, in one way or another, to take your place here."

Kenzie gasped inwardly, she couldn’t believe Kat would do that.  Then she thought to herself, Kat knows what she’s doing, she probably planned this so she could get to him easier.

Kat will be okay.

Lucien called for some guards to help escort them into the forest where Kat, and of course Sage, would be waiting for them.

Kenzie was so happy that during their walk, Lucien turned around and undid the chains around her waist.

"Now, listen.  Don’t run, or I kill you and Kat.  Possibly the Winter Prince.  Also, MacKenzie, remember."

"Remember what?"  She asked shyly.

"The promise I made with the Lady, if this comes out the way we wish it to be.  Don’t go too far, for even if you do, I’ll find you.  My dear."

Kenzie backed away so she was closer to the guards than Lucien.  They started the walk again.  After a while, she could see them.  Once all were in sight of each other, Lucien grabbed her arm and flung her towards Sage, who caught her with ease.  Fenris stood and growled at Lucien, who was walking towards Kat.

"The two of you should go," Lucien said to Kenzie and Sage, "When two friends reconnect, they like to be alone."

Kenzie couldn’t stop herself then, “Kat!  I know you’re stronger than him and anyone he throws at you.”  She tried walking over to her but Sage grabbed her arm, underneath the elbow, Kenzie didn’t shake him off as he pulled her away.  ”You CAN defeat him Kat.  I believe in you.”  She turned away from Kat before the tears fell.

Sage, Kenzie, and Fenris then left, heading towards the Iron Court.

Kat ignored the human’s outburst. Instead she and Lucien held eye contact long after she and the prince left. Lucien made a gesture with his hand, signaling the guards to turn and leave. A smirk broke out across Kat’s face two seconds before her dead lover closed the distance between them.

His lips met hers and they reveled in the moment. Kat’s suppressed feelings came back full-force and she wound her arms behind his neck. Lucien was nearly crushing the feline against him when they took a moment to breathe.

"Kat," he whispered, his pupils were huge from the influx of emotions.

"Lucien," I smirked. I placed my right hand on his face and raising an eyebrow. "Don’t think I didn’t hear what you told the girl. According to our deal you cannot go after her again. Furthermore, I sensed a more romantic intention behind your words. What do you take me for?"

"My dear Kat," he chuckled. "She did not know the terms of our agreement, and I never said I’d go after her but to simply stick around. I can find her all I want, but I can never apprehend her."

"Yes, but you are avoiding my other point."

"The Lady may have put the thought in her head that I was infatuated with her and would make her feel the same about myself."

Kat pursed her lips and took a step back, weighing his words. As a full fey he cannot lie, but he was always the better at getting around the truth. Lucien grinned at the distrust written across her face for him to see.

"And do you plan to follow through with what your Lady wants in that regard?"

"No." Lucien took one of Kat’s hands in his own and gently pulled her back into his space. "She allows me to do many things without her will being imposed. You are one of those things." He bent down and placed his lips against Kat’s in a more tender fashion. "But it is time for you to meet my queen."

"Lead the way," I smirked.

Outside of meeting the queen, Kat had agreed to nothing further and she was well aware that Lucien would keep that in mind. As they started their journey further into the frozen forest, she spared a moment to wonder what Sage was doing with the human.

No Need to Disappear

Kenzie found herself floating in darkness for what seemed like hours. When she came back to reality, she was in the middle of the Wyldwood. chains were around her ankles, and another holding her waist to the man who brought her here, Lucien.

Kenzie was moved to a cell, then, when some guards became worried, she was let out.  However, she stayed chained to Lucien’s belt.  She hated being so close to him, but, whenever she tried to move over, he would send an image of someone, anyone, bloody and broken on the ground; the beast standing above them with it’s teeth dripping blood.

"How much longer will this take?"  the Lady asked as Lucien walked into the throne room.

"Not much more time now."  Lucien replies.  "Kat will come, and when she does, we will be waiting."

Kenzie snorted, quietly, but a quick tug on the chain let her know that Lucien heard her and wasn’t impressed.  She stuck her tongue out at him, which he didn’t see.  A guard did, but he had a small smirk on his face, a sign that he wouldn’t say anything.

Kenzie stopped listening to what Lucien and the Lady were saying, for it confused her, so she sat down.  Since her chains were also around her waist, and there was some but not much slack, Lucien lost his balance for a minute, catching himself right before his face hit the ground.

Kneeling on the ground, Lucien grabbed the chain, and pulled.  Kenzie went sliding across the floor towards him.  She put her hands up to stop herself right before her face slammed into his breastplate.

"If only this were a different circumstance, you, dear MacKenzie, would most likely fall for Lucien.   Am I right?"  the Lady said, grinning at the scene in front of her.

"No.  I would never fall for a nobody like him.”  Kenzie spat back.  She held back her flinch as she feared Lucien would hit her.

The Lady laughed, “Seems your charm is fading dear Lucien, whatever will you do.”

"Once this is all over,"  Lucien said, "everyone, including Kenzie, will fall for me."  He stood up, pulling Kenzie up with him.  "See, she even stands with me.  My charm is still here my Lady."  He taunted Kenzie, tugging lightly on the chain, trying to bring her closer, but Kenzie made sure her feet stayed planted, as if she put all her weight into them and only she could will them to move from their current spot.

"Well," the Lady replied, "I guess that is a future.  Don’t fail me, and I’ll bind you to whomever you choose.  Whether they choose or not."  She eyed Kenzie.

"Okay hold on real quick," Kenzie said, "even if, and that’s a big if, you win.  I’m a mortal.  I’ll die and leav-"

"You misjudge the powers which float around the Nevernever."  The Lady said.  "Like Lucien’s for example, or you dear Kat’s.  How do you know if there is no faerie out there that can make you immortal?"

"I have my ways.  I could find that person, offer them a great bargain for their power too."  Lucien said.

Kenzie’s heart sped too fast.  Her ears ringing.  She didn’t feel in control of her body, but watched it.  Watched it as it threw a punch at Lucien’s face, and one to the chest.  Only one hit it’s mark, the chest.  But Lucien grabbed her arms fast and head-butted her so hard she passed out.

The only thing she thought of before she went fully out was Fenris, and how soft his fur was when he was calm.

Kat hadn’t stayed in the throne room after Grim spoke. She was in the armory of the castle, looking around at the assortment of blades and bows. It was a surprise to see some pistols hanging on a shelf, but Kat dismissed them; iron fey were different maybe they got them to work?

"The Queen wishes you well." Sage stepped in to the room with Fenris close behind.

"In that case, let’s go right now. Who needs preparation or protections when one has the blessing of a Queen?" I snorted and turned back to the daggers laid out on a far table.

"Why do you hate Meghan Chase?"

"I don’t hate her." I picked up a dagger and wasn’t quite pleased with the weight. "Royalty has never been something I held in high regard. Tack on the fact she’s married to the monster that ruined my life and it’s a wonderful concoction of dislike."

Sage said nothing. Kat glanced over her shoulder to see him pick up a sword and sheath, strapping it on the opposite side of his icy blade. She turned back to the smaller blades before her and picked up a dagger with a curve to it; she was not well-enough versed in weaponry to know its name. This one felt more on target and she grabbed a second one. She could not find any sheathes for them, so she shoved them in the tops of her boots.

"Let’s go."

Kat and Sage had left the Iron Realm and were a decent distance into Tir Na Nog before Fenris bristled. A low growl left his throat and Sage drew the icy blade, gazing around the frozen forest.

"He’s not here," I whispered. Sage didn’t stop scanning our surroundings and Fenris didn’t sound too convinced.

"Don’t jump to conclusions," a voice chuckled.

"You’re not here," I growled. "You’re in our heads."

"Very perceptive, Kat."

"Give Sage the human, Lucien."

"And what do you plan on doing?"

"I’ll go see the Queen."

"Kat no." Sage’s voice was steel. Kat stepped further into the forest and Fenris growled louder.

"Keep out of this, prince," Lucien snapped. "Is that a deal?"

"If you give Mackenzie St. James to Sage, Prince of the Unseelie Court, Son of Mab, and cease attempting to capture her then I, Kat, will go with you willingly to see your Queen."

"No!" Sage had a hand on Kat’s wrist and put his other hand across her mouth.

"It is done."

Sage removed his hands and looked angry for the first time since Kat saw him. He sheathed his sword and stood there, glaring at her.

"Well, say something." I leaned against the closest tree. "Lucien will bring her to us and the two of you can go back to Ethan and Meghan."

"Why would you do that? You know what the Forgotton Queen will do with you; to you."

"Sage, I can hold my own."

"You will not be able to fight her on your own. And you have me escorting the human back to the royal family. What were you thinking?"

"I was thinking it’s pointless to drag this out any further."

The two of them were silent as they waited for Lucien to arrive. An hour passed before Kat heard snow crunching beneath boots and she knew it was time. Sage refused to look at her and Fenris was laying by his master’s feet. Lucien appeared with Mackenzie in tow and to guards behind him. He wore a smirk when he saw the feline against a tree.

"Here is the human girl." He threw her out to Sage and never broke eye contact with Kat. "Time to go."

"You haven’t seen an annoying grey cat hanging around here have you?"

"Nope, no cat here. Although I saw some wirecats and clockwork hounds running around outside." He said, wiping the counter top with a rag he found conveniently beside him. He wasn’t expecting her either to be honest.

Kat laughed when he flipped upside-down and spoke.

"Who said you were the powerful fey that I’d anger? No, dear Puck, someone else worries me more than you do."

Her ears twitched though, picking up faint noises of critters scurrying around beneath the trees. Kat sat up a little more and propped her back against the tree trunk. She grinned at the prankster and put her hands behind her head. Her tail wrapped around to sit in her lap because the rough bark felt weird in the fur; that and it was hell to get the sap out.

"But anyway, let’s not focus completely on me. I’m sure you’re no stranger to attention, so it’s your turn," she grinned.

image

Puck pursed his lips. He wasn’t insulted that he wasn’t the powerful fey she didn’t want to anger. Well, he was troublesome when his wrath is exposed to the sun, out of its damp abode. Okay, he was a bit insulted, but that can’t be helped. There are others who are more powerful than him, but not many who can swallow their pride like he can.

Ignoring what she had said to move the spotlight to him, eyebrow raised (or lowered due to his position), he reminded her, “Ah, but Dimples, you haven’t told me your name yet.”

"Mhm," she smiled. "Very true. And you’ve given me one it’s only fair."

Kat thought about what she was going to do very carefully in the short time she was given. Surely, her guardian would not approve. Then again, she very often went against what he said regardless. Kat looked at the red-haired fey hanging down before her.

"You may call me Kat."

She waited for a reaction out of him while she twitched her ears. It would be just her luck for that annoying cat to show up and start bossing her around or threatening to curse her. She watched Puck carefully with a pretty smile on her face.

"Now, why don’t you share a little bit with the class so I’m not the over-achiever here."

She has a counter- of course she had a counter. She was of fair blood just like he was and just as all the old bloods are. They were always collecting something in the end, and what she said was true; minor favors tend to never be minor.

He gave a sigh, wondering if he should continue on. Circuit was never the type to start bargains or enter one; his tongue was like a wet floor- without caution, anything could slip out and danger would follow right behind that. But since he had let the Kat hear that he was in need of something, the option to turn back wouldn’t be that possible anymore.

He looked into her eyes, wondering in his head if she’d make him do something life threatening and hazardous. And by the gleam in her eyes, it might just be the case. But he wanted to ride to the joust and live the dream his younger self had been holding on to for years.

"What….What would the price be for gaining your permission to joust for your honor?"

For the first time in her life Kat had no response.

image

"My… my honor?" She hadn’t meant for the slight crack in her voice at the end of the question. She also hadn’t meant for the question to be asked aloud.

Kat was many things. She was a thief, she was a liar, she was a flirt, and occasionally instigated court rivalries. The fey that knew her and knew of her capabilities never crossed her. They did this more out of fear rather than respect; some of them respected her mischievous ways but not most. As much as she joked about this jousting business and the humor in it, she never thought someone would bet on her honor. Her honor. Did she even have anything worth defending? Even in a festive event, nothing life-threatening.

She blinked slowly for a minute and slipped back into her smile with a little effort. Kat was still completely taken aback.

"You would joust for my honor? Can you even do that?"

When Circuit heard how her voice cracked ever so slightly in the end, he felt a tiny little jolt spark inside him.
He didn’t know why it was there, but just was there.

Looking at Kat so confused and uncertain made the knight confused and uncertain himself. He didn’t require a big favor- just the favor of a lady-someone-anyone to joust for. It wasn’t that hard; Kat didn’t need to do anything at all but sit there and watch him- in fact, she didn’t even need to sit there.

And as Circuit was ready to explain to her why the favor of a lady was important when she had asked her question, the knight saw something entirely different on her face. Doubt.

His lips parted, finding the right words to tell her- to convince her- that her favor is very much needed. And with a small curl of his lips, the knight whispered:

"Don’t we all have honor in us- even just a little bit? If so, let me joust for yours."

image

"Yes," she spoke slowly. "I suppose we do."

Kat was still shocked that he would joust for her honor. There had to be a better selection of girl, or guy or whatever, than her. On the other hand… she was pretty friggin badass. Kat’s mind quickly shut down the pity factory and soon she was filled with her typical show-off-y pride.

"You can joust for my honor, Circuit." Kat nodded at the knight, smirking all the while. "Where is this event even taking place? Surely not here in the town square, there aren’t enough brutes around."

The feline scanned the crowd, looking for an easy distraction to ease all of this damned tension she brought upon herself. She didn’t find much of anything; just more fey chatting wildly among themselves.

"Tell me, who is partaking in today’s events?" She was stalling for time. Why? Kat had no idea, it was just a natural reflex. "Is this your first time taking part?"

theironbabysitter:

"We’re celebrating…Another year has passed since the new establishment of the Iron Kingdom…." he answers- his words slow and careful as though he was pondering on them.

He wondered in his head if Kat would eve appreciate such a celebration since most fey wouldn’t. Most fey, especially the ones from the old court, would always remember this as a time of war and the almost end of their existence. They looked at this as a time when an enemy, rather than an ally, has appeared in their midst.
But for the Iron fey, it was a time where everything was bright- or at least, brighter. Circuit remembered when this Kingdom he called home was once dump in the figurative and literal sense.

He wondered if Kat would appreciate it since most fey wouldn’t.
But then again, Kat wasn’t like most fey.

Circuit then looked at her, and before he could ask the lady why in the world she here once more, he took a real good look at her.
She was a lady- not in the sense she had a rank in the Kingdom, but in the sense that she was a lady in being.

He pressed his lips together, wondering if he should dare to ask.
Surely the Iron queen won’t be picky about his choice; the queen decreed that a knight may fight for anyone’s honor.
If they choose to fight for their lady love, then so be it.
If they choose to fight for their lord’s honor, then so be it.
As long as they upheld the principle of selflessness and being for others, the queen wouldn’t quite give a-well- a damn.

He walked closer to her, holding the reins of  horse to guide the animal closer.

"Kat, I’m going to need a minor favor from you."

"Minor favor?" Kat raised her eyebrows in true astonishment but quickly covered it with a smile. "Y’know, knight, when a fey asks for a minor favor it tends to never ever be minor."

She eyed him curiously as he drew the beast closer. It’s not that Kat had a thing against the horse, they just were incredibly large. Not large like some of the dragons or spiders in the Wyldwood; damn spiders to Hell. Kat could see something brewing behind his eyes though, and it didn’t seem malicious.

"However, you have peeked my interest. Let’s hear it, what is this minor favor?"

God, the fact the words left her lips was a surprise. She knew she was going to give in at some point but now was entirely too early. Inwardly, she sighed at the thought of having to draw things out. It’s been days since she did anything remotely exciting, but dragging things out sometimes did have its drawbacks. The cat let her tail swing back and forth as the Iron Fey around them started to move to the center of town.

image

"However, do not think I won’t have a counter."

She has a counter- of course she had a counter. She was of fair blood just like he was and just as all the old bloods are. They were always collecting something in the end, and what she said was true; minor favors tend to never be minor.

His eyebrows furrowed at such an answer. He wouldn’t let someone like her (who seemed like the type to come and go as she pleases) to endanger his position as a knight of the Iron realm. It was already bad enough he was doing such a terrible job of being Keirran’s personal knight slash guard slash babysitter.

He worked hard for this honor.

"If that’s the case, lady, then I suggest you bother another guard. Surely someone would fall for those pretty lips and beautiful eyes."

"Oh, you think I have pretty lips, do ya?" Kat invaded his space once more to place a kiss on his cheek. "And beautiful eyes? My dear, sir guard I’m swooning."

Kat was in a mocking mood, but there was a deep layer of sincerity to it as well. She stood on her side of the border, leaning against the column on her side of the bridge. She watched and waited for a response but soon tired and spoke again.

"Y’know what? I quite like talking with you. However, if we’re to keep this lovely banter alive, there are some formalities we’ve missed." Kat extended her hand in a non-threatening way toward the guard. "You can call me Kat."

"Pretty enough." he answers, trying to sound as cool and calm as he can be, refusing to show that he wasn’t too fazed by her gesture. The longer she kept up this odd conversation, the more the knight began to wonder why she stayed and mess with his head even more.

"Kat." he breathed, testing the name on his tongue. "And you, Kat, can call me Circuit.”

He took her hand into his and wondered if he should give her a shake as if they were new friends, or give it a kiss as if he was back in the courts. God, he looked like an idiot.

"Circuit," she purred the name. "Wonderful."

She felt the guard’s hesitation once their hands met so she gave a slight shake to save both of them any more awkward moments. Pulling her hand back, she examined the terrain behind him more carefully. It seemed there wasn’t much around but dust and some rocks, but a few small trees stood. The leaves gleamed silver in the light and were probably razor sharp too. Kat was fascinated by the Iron Realm. The idea of machinery and nature co-existing was an intriguing notion.

"So, Circuit, what do you suppose should happen now?"

A new game was now afoot. Once any sort of familiarity is established it makes it harder to dismiss someone. Granted, this fey could be that one in ten that screwed up her perfect streak, but Kat doubted it. She wasn’t quite ready to leave, but throwing the ball into his court so to speak could liven things up. Even if just a bit.

"It’s…." he paused, looking for the right words to say as he watched her. She moved with much confidence- taunting him with every little movement. That playful smirk was the feature that stood out the most to Circuit.

"It’s more complicated than you think…..I think the other courts would be willing to jump on us the moment they hear any fey entering the realm…..Plus…."he licked his lips, then in a barely audible whisper he said: "Plus I might lose my post…."

And he quite liked being a knight….

"I see…"

Kat didn’t move from her spot. She watched the Iron Fey for another few minutes, contemplating what to do next. This was fun, a challenge. Her only dilemma seemed to be this gentle guard. He didn’t seem likely to fight her but he was positioned on the border of the realm; that counted for something right?

"Surely there must be something that could work, hm?" Kat raised an eyebrow and looked past him. "I’m willing to bet that another guard will come to take your place. Surely, at that time it could no longer be your responsibility if I were to cross over and… explore."
